Frequently asked questions
- What's LESSON.md?
- An open markdown format for full courses. One file per lesson, bundled into a zip with course-level metadata. Your AI drafts it; Slate imports the whole bundle and turns it into a styled, editable course. Spec at lesson.md, full import details at docs.slatebuilder.io.
- Which AI tools can I use?
- Anything that can produce a text file: private Claude, local models, internal GPT, Copilot for Business, or by hand. We never see it.
- What's not included compared with cloud Slate?
- Anything cloud-dependent: in-editor AI, the Review tool, Share & Track, MCP, the Canva app, real-time team workspaces, Dynamic SCORM. The authoring experience and standalone exports (SCORM, xAPI, cmi5, HTML, PDF) are the same. Collaboration happens by passing .slate, SCORM, or LESSON.md files between team members instead of through cloud workspaces.
- Will it phone home?
- Only to check your licence. No analytics, telemetry, or course content. The full breakdown is in the draft privacy policy.
- What about fully air-gapped networks?
- Separate licence option. Activation by signed certificate instead of a network call, renewed yearly.
- When will it launch?
- Currently in development. Leave your email and we'll let you know when there's an official launch date. Legal docs will be finalized at launch.
