Built by creators, for creators.
We're two developers who spent years building learning experiences. Now we're building the tools we — and the instructional designers we've worked with — have been asking for.
How it started
Pitched at Volta in 2018 — Halifax's startup accelerator — as one of 16 selected from 58 applicants for an onboarding and training startup (knack). It didn't work out, but the lessons stuck.
Spent 10+ years each in L&D technology — specializing in enterprise content management: instructional design and authoring, UX and template development, and content structure. Together, we built responsive web templates, custom learning path templates, a compliance tracking API, and an internal eLearning podcast platform — all serving 25,000+ employees.
Started Override Labs as a side project — a Chrome Extension born from frustration with limited customization options in Articulate Rise (now Slate for Rise).
Launched in early 2025 — our first real users, our first real feedback.
Rebranded to Slate for Rise in December 2025, while our full authoring platform was already well underway.
Launched Slate in January 2026 — our own eLearning authoring tool, now open to early adopters. Start a free trial from our website and share feedback directly within the app.
Incorporated as Slate eLearning Inc. — officially a Canadian corporation, committed to building tools that help creators thrive.
Why we build
We believe creating responsive, engaging, and accessible eLearning should be straightforward. Not locked behind enterprise pricing. Not buried in complexity.
With combined 30+ years in learning technology and front-end development, we've seen what works and what doesn't. We've built courses, designed templates for enterprise LMS platforms, created custom learning API integrations, and dealt with content management at scale. For years, we've been participants and sounding boards for instructional designers and subject matter experts — from intake to review, deployment, and post-launch support.
Slate is our answer: professional-quality tools at a reasonable price, with modern conveniences like AI assistance — designed to help you work faster, not replace your expertise.
Our approach to AI
AI should enhance your creativity, not replace it.
We didn't set out to build an AI product. But thoughtfully integrated AI can save time and reduce friction — so we've woven it into Slate as a utility, not a gimmick. You won't find flashy purple AI buttons demanding attention. Instead, assistance is there when you need it, invisible when you don't. The creator always stays in control.
(To be fair, there is one banana — for nano banana image generation.)
